Quality monograde mineral oil is used in classic engines because:

  • Comparatively high engine tolerances need a thick stable oil 
  • Low detergent levels don’t compromise early felt seals 
  • Gauze filters cannot remove suspended contamination. SAE 30 allows contamination to fall harmlessly to the bottom of the sump

  • Vintage and Classic engines before 1950
  • Any engine running a gauze style oil filter
  • Early VW/Porsche flat-4 air-cooled engines

SAE 30 is commonly used in all 4-stroke petrol and diesel engines manufactured before 1950 and those engines with a gauze style filter manufactured up to 1970 such as VW Aircooled. It is a low detergent, low dispersant lubricant, so it should be changed every 6 months or 3,000 miles. Ideally use MOTUL Engine Clean to break down debris in the sump and drain when hot. Thoroughly clean the gauze filter before you refill.
For the first 60 years of motoring many gearboxes were designed to take the same or very similar oil to the engine. MOTUL SAE 30 is a quality monograde mineral oil that works very well in vintage and classic gearboxes, especially those fitted with overdrive units (typically between 1930 and 1960). It has a very low detergent level so it is compatible with felt and fabric gaskets and seals found in most gearboxes before 1970.
